August Bible Memory Verse
Psalm 62:1-2 (NIV) 1 My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
Psalm 97: 1-12 (NIV)
1 The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice.
2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 3 Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. 4 His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory.
7 All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols—worship him, all you gods!
8 Zion hears and rejoices and the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments, O Lord. 9 For you, O Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.
10 Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. 11 Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. 12 Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.
It’s a huge responsibility to be the Church, to be the followers of Christ. I think sometimes we take it for granted, being a follower of Jesus, and we make allowances for ourselves, we just don’t take being part of God’s Kingdom all that seriously. But the world is watching. The world is listening to what we say and whether our words line up with our actions.
Luke 10:16-20 (NIV)
16 “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects Him who sent me.”
17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
The main argument people have against examining the faith in Christ is the followers of Jesus that they interact with.
What we need to show people is the beauty of the design, the genius of what Jesus said to His followers, His family.
Theme today: Jesus does leadership training. This is the second time the disciples are sent out to proclaim that the Messiah has arrived.
Two things happen:
- The disciples are sent out with the same power that Jesus has; to heal, let out demons and to have been given the real authority.
- The demons submitted to them in Jesus’ name.
We will focus on 1) the power of partnership, 2) secret of servanthood.
Jesus sends out 72, the inner circle of Jesus followers, learning about Jesus. The 72 sent out have been givers of the exact power and authority as when Jesus sent out the first 12 sent out Himself.
There is a principle here. God never calls you in to bless you without sending you back out to others.
Genesis 12:2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
Abraham is getting the deal from God; God tells him I’m blessing you in order to be a blessing. “Blessed in order to be a blessing.” God is making you His partner.
Jesus doesn’t just give us jobs, He gives us authority, which is the right and power, sent for a mission.
John 15:16 You did not choose me. Rather, I chose you. And I appointed you to go out and bear fruit, fruit that will remain, so that the Father may give you whatever you ask him in my name.
We are to go and speak, cast out demons, share cold water, comfort one another and confront wrongdoers. We are doing this ministry to bring glory to the name of Jesus.
“Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”
John didn’t have what we have today. We have the full picture and knowledge of the Gospel. We know the good news in a way John didn’t. We understand that we are more sinful than we can imagine and more loved and accepted than we ever dare hoped.
In John 17, Jesus prays that the disciples will have the full measure of Christ’s joy within them. The truth is the joy will come in the midst of the hardships.
Nehemiah 8:10 Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
If you don’t want to be hurt in life, don’t give your heart away. Don’t get involved with broken people, because they have a tendency to break you a little. Only hang with perfect people.
C. S. Lewis talks about putting your heart in a casket of selfishness. Your heart will not be broken, but it will become hard, impenetrable. Your heart will start to shrink due to non-use, until we have no heart at all.
Our Church is a hospital for the broken. This means life can get messy, we are called to minister to folks who are messy and that are often in the middle of a mess.
We are to talk about the hope we have in Jesus, not to solve things immediately but be reminded that we are loved and accepted no matter what mistakes we have made.
God has us, and because of that life will get better on His timeline.
All our lives become a pure partner for the next ministry you are called to do, the next person you are called to serve. These people will be reacted for reasons on your part and talents you have acquired.
Be careful how you live; you will be the only Bible some people ever read. ~William Thoms
God sends us into the world and to specific people. We are to help the people that God brings into our life, we are part of God’s family.
Luke 10:20 “Rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Your relationship to God will never fade away. God knows your name and has been written down. He is waiting for you. He is preparing a place for you.
Christ has a specific mission for you or many. You don’t have to be perfect; you will make mistakes. God will sustain you in your mission.
Christ is sending you out with authority to serve the broken and to bless these people.
Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.
God bless, use your life as a blessing to the broken. Christ Jesus will sustain you in that mission. Your name will be written in the Book of Heaven.
