God’s Attributes 5

“Power and Majesty”

Pastor David Moore

Mark 4:35‐41

That day when evening came, He said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”   Leaving the crowd behind, they took Him along, just as He was, in the boat.  There were also other boats with Him.  A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.  The disciples woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”  Then the wind died down and it was completely calm

He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid?  Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this?  Even the wind and the waves obey Him!”

Power

∙ Ability to act or produce an effect

∙ Possession of control, authority, or influence over others

★ The ability to do; having access to whatever is needed for the doing

Psalm 33:6‐22

By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of His mouth.  He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; He puts the deep into storehouses.  Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere Him.  For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.  The LORD foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples.  But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He chose for His inheritance.  From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind; from His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth—He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.  No king is saved by the size of His army; no warrior escapes by His great strength.  A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save.  But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.

We wait in hope for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.  In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name.  May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.

So how powerful does Scripture say God is?  He made everything.  Psalms tells us God has the oceans in a jar.  God has the ability to act.  There is nothing that God cannot do.  God alone has the absolute power to act on any and all of His intentions into being.  ~D. Moore

We experience a gap between what we want to have happen and what we can actually bring into reality.  For God there is no gap.  His power is absolute.  ~D. Moore

God’s absolute power determines every one of His attributes and qualities and is the reigning reality of the universe.  ~D. Moore

We (humans) want to have an impact on the world with other people.  The only way is to have faith in God’s unfailing love‐‐and that will save us.  The Bible says being a Christian and submitting to God’s power will strengthen our human faith, which allows us to have an impact in this world. God’s power working through our hearts and minds will have an influence in our daily walk with others.

The main emotion of the adult American who has had all the advantages of wealth, education, and culture is a disappointment.  In the end having these advantages is not enough.

Power doesn’t save. God saves.  He will be our shield, if we trust Him.

2 Timothy 1:7  For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self‐discipline.

Either God rules our lives, or we try to rule our lives.  The small choice of submitting to God each day in every small task we undertake, puts us on a trajectory.  A choice becomes a habit which becomes our character.  ~D. Moore

As a Christian, trusting in God’s unfailing love, He becomes our shield.  We begin to let God be God allowing us to trust Him.  ~D. Moore

Psalm 13:5  But I trust in your unfailing love.  I will rejoice because you have rescued me.

This week, let God become your shield.  You are in His hands.  This act of submission will change your relationship with God forever.

Have a great week!
